Letter, [1899, Oakland, California to] Miss Woods / C.E.M. [Charles Edwin Markham]. 1899.

In response to an article in the newspaper which noted that her book includes characters suggested by real life, Markham warns her that such revelations might lead to serious troubles. It could "give rise to unjust rumors and are a vulgar means for hoping to help out the sale of a book."

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
